Festivals and celebrations throughout the year

Bonaire buzzes year-round with colorful celebrations, traditional festivals and cultural events. From exuberant Carnival celebrations to intimate harvest festivals - each season brings its own magic. As your local guide, I'm happy to share the highlights of our festival year with you.

Maskarada - New Year's Celebration (January 1st)

The new year begins on Bonaire with Maskarada, a colorful tradition where groups of masked dancers and musicians parade through the streets. This joyful procession combines African, Dutch and Caribbean influences.

  • Early rising pays off - the most beautiful parades start around 6 AM
  • Follow the groups through Kralendijk for the best experience
  • Traditional costumes and masks make this a photographic highlight

Bonaire Carnival (February-March)

Our Carnival lasts for weeks and culminates in the Grand Parade. This is the biggest celebration of the year, bringing the entire community together in an explosion of music, dance and color.

  • The Tumba Festival takes place before Carnival - this is where the official Carnival hit is chosen
  • Friday and Saturday evenings are the liveliest moments
  • Book accommodation well in advance - this is our busiest weekend

Dia di Rincon (April 30th)

Rincon, Bonaire's oldest village, celebrates its rich history with a day full of traditional music, dance and local delicacies. The Seu dance and live Tumba music take center stage.

  • Visit historic sites in the village with free guided tours

Simadan Festival (February-May)

Our harvest festival celebrates the tradition of corn and sorghum harvesting. Although agriculture is less central than before, Simadan remains an important cultural moment full of gratitude and community spirit.

Bonaire Day (September 6th)

Our national holiday commemorates the discovery of Bonaire in 1499 and celebrates Bonairean identity. A day of pride, music and solidarity with events throughout the island.

Bonaire Sailing Regatta (October)

Sailing enthusiasts from throughout the Caribbean region come to Bonaire for this prestigious event. Lac Bay transforms into a lively sailing destination with races for all levels.

Bonaire Dive Festival (November)

Terramar Museum events (throughout the year)

Music and dance - The heart of Bonaire
