Dive Schools on Bonaire
About dive schools on Bonaire
Learning to dive on Bonaire means training in some of the world's best conditions. The island offers over 85 official dive sites with clear waters, minimal current, and water temperatures of 26-28°C year-round. Most dive schools are located in Kralendijk and offer PADI and SSI courses from beginner to professional levels. You'll practice directly on beautiful house reefs, giving you immediate experience in tropical waters.
Courses and pricing
A PADI Open Water course costs between $350-450, depending on the school and season. If you've already completed theory and pool training at home, you can finish your open water dives on Bonaire for approximately $240-260. Most schools work with small groups of maximum 4 people for personal attention. Popular follow-up courses include Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and various specialties like Nitrox, underwater photography, and night diving.
Technical diving is becoming increasingly popular on Bonaire. TEC courses teach you to dive deeper and longer using special equipment and thorough training. For those considering a career in diving, several schools also offer instructor training. Buddy Dive Academy, for example, is a PADI 5-star Career Development Center, one of only 100 worldwide.
Practical information
Before your first dive on Bonaire, a mandatory orientation dive is required regardless of your experience. This usually costs $40-60 and familiarizes you with local conditions and Bonaire National Marine Park rules. You'll also need the STINAPA Nature Fee of $40 per year to dive legally.
Most dive schools rent complete equipment for about $40-50 per day. Many schools also offer flexible tank cards, allowing you to dive at your own pace. This makes Bonaire unique - after your course, you can do independent shore diving from almost any beach on the west coast. Some schools also organize boat dives to Klein Bonaire or the more remote northern sites.
Best season and tips
Diving on Bonaire is possible year-round, but December through April is the driest season with the best underwater visibility. Constant trade winds provide pleasant above-water temperatures of 27-32°C. Start with shore diving on the south side like Bachelor Beach or Pink Beach - these are more sheltered with less current.
Choose a school that teaches in your language. Many Bonaire schools offer instruction in Dutch and English, which is convenient for European visitors. Ask about group size - smaller groups mean more personal attention. If you plan to dive extensively after your course, choose a school that also offers good rental packages for equipment and tanks.
