Why November is perfect for Bonaire
November is one of the best months to visit Bonaire. The rainy season is over, temperatures are ideal, and the trade winds provide lovely cooling. You avoid the crowds of the high season months while enjoying all the benefits of the dry season.
This month offers excellent conditions for all water activities. Underwater visibility is often at its best, sometimes 100 feet or more. For divers and snorkelers, this means clear conditions at all 86 dive sites around the island.
On land, November is also ideal. Temperatures range between 81-86°F, perfect for exploring Washington Slagbaai National Park or planning a family vacation.
Weather and climate in November
Temperature and rainfall
November falls within Bonaire's dry season. Average temperatures hover around 84°F during the day and rarely drop below 77°F at night. It's warm but not muggy, thanks to the constant northeastern trade winds.
Rainfall is minimal in November, averaging just 3-4 rainy days. When it does rain, these are usually brief tropical showers that pass quickly. Humidity sits around 75%, which feels comfortable due to the wind.
Wind and sea
The trade winds blow consistently from the northeast in November at 15-20 knots. This keeps temperatures very pleasant and creates ideal conditions at Lac Bay for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
The sea is calm on the west coast where most beaches and dive sites are located. Wave heights typically stay under half a meter, perfect for shore diving and snorkeling from the beach.
Diving and snorkeling
Optimal conditions
November ranks among the best diving months on Bonaire. Underwater visibility is excellent, often 80-100 feet and sometimes even more. Water temperature holds steady around 82°F, making a shorty wetsuit or rashguard sufficient.
All 86 dive sites are accessible, including the more exposed northern locations. 1000 Steps and other popular spots have minimal waves and current.
Marine life in November
November is an active month underwater. Young sea turtles that hatched earlier in the year are now large enough to spot regularly. At Town Pier during night dives, you often see large groups of juvenile hawksbill turtles.
Reef fish are very active in the slightly cooler water temperatures. Parrotfish, angelfish, and surgeonfish are present in large numbers. Eagle rays are also regularly spotted at the deeper dive sites.
Land activities
Washington Slagbaai National Park
November is perfect for exploring the national park. Temperatures are pleasant for the 34-kilometer route and the three hiking trails. The park is open Tuesday through Sunday from 8:00-17:00 (last entry 14:30).
Note: You need a high SUV for the route. Regular cars won't get far. Bring plenty of water, there are no facilities in the park.
Birdwatching
November is excellent for birdwatching. More than 210 bird species have been recorded on Bonaire, and many migratory birds are present during this month. Flamingos are very active at Pekelmeer and Gotomeer.
The flamingo breeding ritual begins in early December, so by late November you'll already see preparations in the form of courtship behavior.
Water activities
Windsurfing and kitesurfing
The constant trade winds make November ideal for windsurfing at Lac Bay. Winds average 15-20 knots from the northeast, perfect for beginners and advanced riders alike.
For kitesurfers, Atlantis Beach is the only permitted location. Note: Kitesurfing at Lac Bay is prohibited due to the protected mangroves and seagrass beds.
Kayaking
The calm waters in November make it perfect for exploring Lac Bay's mangroves by kayak. This unique ecosystem serves as a nursery for many fish species, and you often spot juvenile reef fish among the roots.
Practical considerations
Crowds and pricing
November falls just before high season, so prices are still relatively low. Accommodations are readily available and restaurants less crowded than in December-April.
It's still wise to book dive operators and water taxis to Klein Bonaire in advance, especially on weekends.
What to pack
Pack light, breathable clothing. UV protection is essential, the sun is strong and the constant wind masks how quickly you can burn. Bring reef-safe sunscreen to protect the coral.
For diving, a shorty wetsuit (3mm) or rashguard is sufficient. Dive gloves are prohibited in the Marine Park.
