Tours & Excursions on Bonaire
About tours & excursions on Bonaire
Tours and excursions on Bonaire let you discover the island in ways that are difficult to manage on your own. From jeep safaris through Washington Slagbaai National Park to kayak trips through the mangroves of Lac Bay, each tour shows a different side of the island. Most excursions last half a day and cost between $40 and $80 per person, depending on group size and what's included.
Nature Tours and Wildlife
Flamingo spotting at the salt pans is a highlight of many island tours. You'll see the pink birds best in early morning or late afternoon when they're actively foraging. Washington Slagbaai National Park has many bumpy roads that are better explored with a guide, especially if you want to understand the different ecosystems. Bird watching is good year-round, but between December and March you'll see more migratory species.
The Donkey Sanctuary gets many positive reviews from visitors who want to hear the stories behind the rescued donkeys. Many tours combine a visit to the sanctuary with other stops, so you get more value for your money. Bring bug spray, especially if your tour goes through areas with mangroves.
Water-Based Excursions
Kayak tours through Lac Bay bring you close to the mangroves where juvenile fish grow up. The shallow bay is protected from waves, making kayaking suitable for beginners too. Some operators combine kayaking with snorkeling on the same trip. Note that kitesurfing activity at Lac Bay can sometimes make the water busy.
Boat trips to Klein Bonaire depart from Karel's Beach Bar on the boulevard in Kralendijk. The uninhabited islet has no facilities, so bring plenty of water. Snorkel tours here often show sea turtles and various reef fish. The crossing takes about 15 minutes and most providers offer half-day trips.
Practical Booking Tips
Book tours in advance, especially between December and March when it's high season and demand is high. Many operators offer free cancellation up to 24 hours beforehand. Private tours cost more but give you flexibility to adjust the pace and stops to your interests. Group tours are cheaper and you'll meet other travelers.
Sunset boat tours are popular but check the weather forecast, as wind can make the trip less comfortable. Bring water shoes for excursions that include beach hopping and don't forget to apply sunscreen, even if it looks cloudy. Most tours depart from Kralendijk or pick you up at your accommodation for a small surcharge.
